Thoughts on Ron Paul?
Earmark this, Ron Paul!
By Joseph Farah

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Despite being called every name in the book and then some by rabid Ron Paul supporters over the last year, I still had a modicum of respect for the candidate himself – until his big moment on "Meet the Press."
I've had my disagreements with Ron Paul – and they are big ones.
He and his supporters seem to think America can, in 2008, decide we just don't want to be involved with determined foreign enemies who have sought to destroy the U.S. since it became a nation. He and his supporters seem to think that America itself is to blame for creating its enemies because of its own interventionist meddling.
While I agree America has involved itself in world problems far more than it should, I will never accept that our enemies will leave us alone if we leave them alone.
Having studied America's No. 1 foreign enemy, Islamic radicalism, for the better part of the last 28 years, I can only say Ron Paul and his supporters are just dead wrong about this. Furthermore, we'll all be dead wrong if we follow his prescription.
Believe me, I wish it were as easy as Ron Paul suggests. But the sad truth is that if we run from this enemy now, our days as a country living in relative peace and prosperity are over. Dr. Paul's prescription for peace is actually the kind of prescription you'd expect from Dr. Kevorkian.
Nevertheless, despite those serious differences, I thought there was much to like and admire about Ron Paul.
What I had always appreciated about him was his outspoken support for the Constitution, the fact that he didn't get caught up in the trappings of Washington power, that he wasn't a hypocrite.
I believed all that. And I have to thank Tim Russert for blowing his cover.
I just simply didn't know that Ron Paul plays the Washington racket just like the rest of the gang. The only difference is he has figured out a system of plausible deniability for himself – a way he can still maintain his image of incorruptibility and integrity, while bringing home the pork to his Texas district with the kind of efficiency that would make Robert Byrd blush.
Ron Paul developed his reputation as a constitutional tax fighter and proponent of limited government through decades of voting "no."
But that hasn't stopped him from earmarking federal tax dollars for his district's own pet pork projects – to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars!
Paul defended his actions on "Meet the Press" in spin that would make Bill Clinton proud.
"I've never voted for an earmark in my life," he explained. "I'm against the tax system, but I take all my tax credits. I want to get their money back for the people."
This is actually as ingenious as it is immoral.
Ron Paul knows his vote against his own earmarks for pork is meaningless to the actual outcome. He's going to get his pork because every member of Congress gets his pork. But Ron Paul gets the psychic satisfaction of voting against it – after, of course, he proposed it.
While I'm sure this makes him feel better about himself, is he really any less guilty of picking taxpayer pockets than the rest of them?
And I love the second part of his explanation in which he likens his support of pork to a "tax credit." Yet, isn't this logic that any one of the other bandits in the House and Senate could use to justify their own game of unconstitutional plunder?
Here's another problem I have with his answer: Is pork good or bad? I don't understand his duplicitous answer. Is he defending pork as a good way of bringing money back to taxpayers? Or is he condemning it as the waste we all know it to be?
Ron Paul wants to have it both ways, doesn't he?
While portraying himself as cleaner than the wind-driven snow, a man standing up against the machine, a courageous freedom fighter, it turns out Ron Paul is just another politician using the system for his own empowerment, his own ego and defending this abuse of the Constitution with his own relativistic moral code.

Social Liberal vs Fiscal Liberal
Conservatives have reason to beware of Mike Huckabee. Huckabee, as nearly everyone must know, is more or less a liberal on taxes, immigration, and crime. Many conservatives, and justifiably so, are condemning him for these positions. Without much success, evidently, since he is the national frontrunner.
But this isn't the first time in this campaign that we had an obvious liberal as the GOP frontrunner. Rudy Giuliani has consistently led in the polls for the majority of the race. While he led, many conservatives simply shrugged and commented on the fact that it was remarkable that a pro-abortion candidate could possibly get the nomination. "He may be liberal on some issues, but maybe he can beat Hillary." Very few prominent conservatives really got into the whole Giuliani-bashing business. Most treated him as a well-qualified candidate.
When the social liberal Giuliani was teh frontrunner, conservative pundits said nothing. When fiscal liberal Huckabee was the frontrunner, the same conservative pundits said "HUCKACIDE.!!! It's the end of the Republican Party!".
When social liberals are welcomed as the frontrunner, while fiscal liberals are anathema, is it any wonder that so many embittered social conservatives embrace one of their own, even at the expense of the well-being of the Republican party?

Fred Thompson & The Troops!
Fred Thompson is about to embark on a campaign blitz that will take him all over Iowa. And after his performance at the last debate the "show of hands" game the moderator tried to get the candidates to play that Fred Thompson was'nt having any part of and let her know it, show's he's got his old gumption back and isnt there to play games.
Along the way Fred has picked up the most important endorsement of all that really counts, The Troops! If they want him to be thier Commander-In-Chief then that's good enough for me.
Here is a *snip* of a letter from one Soldier To Another:
Dear Fellow Veteran:
While most of us are stateside enjoying the comforts of home with family and friends during this holiday season, hundreds of thousands of brave men and women will remain abroad defending our freedom and that of others.
We are in the trenches stateside helping Fred Thompson run for President because he is the most experienced and consistent conservative leader of the major candidates. It is imperative to have a solid Commander-in-Chief to lead our nation during time of war, and Fred is that man.
Some of our troops in Iraq agree, and are showing their support for Fred there. You can see more on the Vets for Fred site.
Last month, Fred rolled out his plan to revitalize our military in a speech at the Citadel entitled: "Four Pillars of a Revitalized National Defense" which you can review by clicking here. His plan is being widely hailed as a substantive and sound policy proposal.
Fred's plan increases the defense budget to 4.5% of GDP and builds a "million member" ground force with and Army end strength of 775,000 organized into 64 brigade combat teams and increase active duty Marine Corps forces by 50,000 to 225,000. This will enable us to handle peacetime and wartime missions without wearing out our troops or increasing the vulnerability of the United States. As Fred stated, "Half-measures and small increases will no longer do."
Here is what a people have said about Fred's plan:
*Investor's Business Daily:
"Fred Thompson wants a million-man ground force and more modern equipment on the ground, in the air and on the water. The arsenal of democracy needs some retooling....Once again the U.S. military is depleted and exhausted...It may be time for another buildup like Reagan's that brought down the evil empire and gave us the means for victory in Desert Storm."
*The Weekly Standard:
"Fred Thompson staked out a Reaganesque position on defense spending and the need to increase the size of the military... Thompson is talking about a real build-up of the kind that this administration should have undertaken from the moment it entered office, but failed to do even after the attacks on 9/11."
*The National Review:
"While most candidates have called for increasing the size of the military, Thompson laid out a detailed plan to achieve that end...Thompson has set a standard of specificity, conservatism, and soundness that we would like to see the other Republican candidates measure up to."
Our troops, veterans and their families deserve a Commander in Chief who is ready on Day One, not someone who needs on-the-job training when it comes to foreign affairs and national security.
Fred Thompson will be ready to lead the minute he is sworn in, and that is why we are supporting him for President.

Just how did this guy get in the race all of the sudden? It seemed as if we were in Church listening to a Sermon when he was speaking today in the Iowa Republican Debate!

Thoughts on Immigration
As we move at virtual lightspeed into this new election season which has lasted longer than the NBA playoffs, one issue continues to remain out in the cold, and no one seems willing to let it into the warmth of the living room.
Illegal Immigration.
Despite overwhelming resistance to all of the immigration bills that have been presented in Congress, there is a segment of our society that believes we should extend a hand in welcome to anyone who cares to sneak across our borders. The state of North Carolina is mandating that the state's college system accept illegal immigrants. The liberal left refer to "undocumented workers" until a GOP candidate hired a company that hired illegal immigrants and tried to derail his campaign.
On the flip side, the state of Arizona is enforcing new laws against illegal immigration that have lead to hundreds of illegals leaving the state each day. The jobs are drying up, the benefits are being denied, and the state is returning to they way they want their state. Of course there are lawsuits, but Arizona should stand up and tell the Federal Courts to put a sock in it and stand back. Have we forgotten that the individual states are supposed to have the protection of the federal government and not squirm under it's thumb? If the federal government can refuse to enforce their own laws, they should step back when a state decides to set its own.
We need movement on illegal immigration. It doens't have to be sweeping new legislation. It doesn't have to be "reform", which is politico-speak for "finding a new way to do the same old stupid stuff but everyone thinks we are moving forward". What is has to be is the commitment to America, a dedication for the preservation of our union, and some acknowledgment that Americans should place America before anyone else.
World citizenship be damned.

Marie Offers Her 2 Cents on the Latest Debate!
Giuliani got off to a great start and then faded out when it got to the 2nd amendment, sanctuary cities, and who Romney employed at his home. Would be great in the War On Terror however.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Huckabee sounded great, answered all the questions, gave some great one liners, (Sending Hillary To Mars Stole The Show), sounded very convincing and believable. Not sure how he would handle the War On Terror.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hunter, wonderful. He had a plan for everything, yet I wonder if his plans to pay for and implement the plans he has will cost us all something in the long run. Would be great on border issues. Dont know how he would handle the War On Terror.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excellent come backs. Great one liners, to soft on immigration, water boarding, and taxes. Hangs out with the Liberals too much, Would be great in the War On Terror, but that's about all I can give him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Well what can we say about Ron Paul that has'nt already been said? He rambled on with his wild vision for America that will never go over with the American voter. Then again he was being, well.....Ron Paul.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Did Great! Look's Presidential. Has a lot of plans also. I like the talk of the use of his veto pen. Not sure how he would manage the War On Terror.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Seal the border or this man will haunt you for the rest of your life. Great on the border issues, not sure how he would handle the War On Terror.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excellent. A little more gumption in this debate. Has a plan for everything AND a way to pay for it. Great on Taxes, Social Security, National Security, the Global War On Terror. Wont put up with Islamic Terrorist Crap. Snappy comebacks, gave Ron Paul what for. Want's States to take more responsibility for what goes on in their states rather than the Federal Govt. Look's Presidential. Did ALOT better in this debate than previous debates. Know's exactly how to handle the War On Terror.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What was with all the stupid questions? I am hearing the YouTube "supposed" undecided Republican Voters (As was described By Anderson Cooper) were mostly Democrat plants! I didn't know having gay's in the Military was a huge issue in this Presidential Election! BECAUSE IT ISNT!!! Farm Subsidies? A Rebel Flag? The Bible? What would Jesus do? This was as bad as stuffing Spinach funding into a Troop Funding Bill! The YouTube crowd steered clear from asking the real questions: Taxes, The Border, The War On Terror, Foreign Policy, Education, Medical, etc.. Which makes me think the stories I am hearing about Democrat plant's is right!
So still confused? I cant blame you because this was one stupid debate.
Who won this loopy debate? I say Fred, but let's hear from YOU!!!
UPDATE:
REPORT: CNN Republican questioners were DECLARED Edwards and Obama voters...
McCain: 'I think it should have been revealed'...
MSNBC HOST: 'Total crap to suggest that nobody in CNN knew'...
VIDEO: Anderson Cooper's Mea Culpa...
CNN Cooper: 'I had not heard that he's actually working for a campaign. If so, that would certainly be an issue that should be addressed immediately'...

The Political Pistachio Makes His Endorsments
The need for a Red November in 2008 is constantly on my mind. Everywhere I turn, I see idiotic moves made by Liberals, and it reminds me that it is imperative that the Republican Party not only keep the White House, but regain Congress. I don't think that a Red November is so imperative because the Republican Party is so wonderful. In fact, to be honest, many Republicans are not exactly on my good list. A Red November during the election in 2008 is important primarily because the Democratic Party and the Liberal Left they cater to is so horribly bad.
Need an example?
Well, how about Cambridge, Massachusetts and the sudden battle erupting there because the Boy Scouts are being seen as political for collecting care packages for American Troops in Iraq, a no-no apparently because the boxes for collecting the items for the care packages were, in some cases, too close to polling stations.
Huh? Collecting items for a care package is a political statement?
According to the Liberals in Cambridge, yes. Hear Andrea Shea King's take on this on the Voice of Liberty Podcast Network.
Governor Jim Gilmore announces he is a candidate for the U.S. Senate
ALEXANDRIA -- Former Virginia Republican Governor Jim Gilmore said today he is a candidate for the U.S. Senate, setting up what the media has labeled "Clash of the Titans 2008" as Gilmore takes on former Democrat Governor Mark Warner for the honor of succeeding U.S. Sen. John Warner.
"We have a great many challenges facing our country." said Gilmore. "Of course, serious problems and crises are nothing new for America. But today, I'm sorry to say, we also find too often that our leaders just aren't up to the challenge."
"America has a lot of work to do and doesn't have the right leaders to do it," the former Virginia Governor said.
Although America is facing great challenges Gilmore said he remains optimistic about the future. "We haven't lost what's down deep in all of us, and what really keeps us together despite all the problems that seem to have descended on us of late," said Gilmore.
"I'm running for the United State Senate from Virginia because I want to be one of those leaders who call on the spirit that is common in all of us, and use it to restore our country for the benefit of our people and in the eyes of the world."
The Gilmore announcement sets up a high profile contest between the two Virginia candidates for the U.S. Senate. Gilmore, a nationally recognized authority on homeland security, has spent years addressing the issues of national security, terrorism and border security. Mark Warner raised taxes as Governor after promising as a candidate that he would not increase taxes.
http://www.jimgilmoreforsenate.com/
I have asked Governor Gilmore, who appeared on Political Pistachio Radio last July 21st to discuss his decision to withdraw from the Presidential Race, to come on my show again to talk about his decision to run for Senate. I will keep you posted on that opportunity, and how important it is for Jim Gilmore to succeed. The date I requested is the 29th of November, the day after I have William Russell on as a guest.
William Russell For Congress
Congressional Candidate William Russell is the Republican running against John Murtha next year for the Pennsylvania 12th District House of Representatives seat, and he will be joining Political Pistachio Radio on November 28th. One question I have in mind already is, how will Mr. Russell accomplish beating a foe that is so entrenched in pork for his district? Tune in on the 28th at 10 pm Eastern Time for the answer.
John Bootie for President
John Bootie is of the Conservative stripe, a stripe so conservative that the Republicans should be more like him. He is campaigning as The Next Lincoln/Reagan, and claims he is so conservative that he makes Rush Limbaugh look like a liberal. He joins Political Pistachio Radio Wednesday Night, November 21st (Thanksgiving Eve) to talk about his campaign, and the importance of giving thanks where it is due this Thanksgiving. *Special Note, John Bootie and I will also do a Political Pistachio Episode the Saturday before CHRISTmas regarding the War on CHRISTmas, and political correctness's attempt to kill Christianity as a faith in America!!!
Sarah Palin for Vice President
Alaska Governor Sarah Palin has an approval rating that Federal Politicians could only dream of having. She is articulate, intelligent, and conservative. So why hasn't her name come up more often when names are being thrown around regarding the Presidency, or at least the Vice Presidency? Ah, but it has been. Well, a couple of National Review Online Pundits have indicated that she ought to be Vice President, anyway. Why not? On Saturday, November 24th, three of the brightest minds in blogging, and Sarah Palin supporters, will be on my show. Two of them, Steve Maloney and Adam Brickley, have been on the show before. Trish Houser is the other guest, and she participated in Sarah Palin's campaign for Governor of Alaska. Trish may give us some insight about Sarah Palin. Oh, and I sent a second e-mail off to Sarah hoping to gain her attention - perhaps we'll be graced by her presence too. Anyhow, tune in Saturday at 7 pm Eastern Time to Political Pistachio Radio to listen to this fantastic panel regarding Sarah Palin.

Another Point of View,....
He makes a valid point, and since the Red November Initiative is about inclusion of any and all ideas to stop the Shrillary Express, I'm posting it here:
Why No Push For Duncan Hunter?
As we look at the potential candidates, there are too many who follow the MSM’s push like little lambs. We look at polls, name recognition, and electability factors. What we should be looking at are the issues that matter to us.
As far as conservative principles go we can throw Rudy Giuliani out of the picture straight up. The only thing he has going for him is the National Defense/anti-Hillary thing. It’s hard to tell where Mitt Romney really stands. Tom Tancredo has a great stance on the border issue, and solid conservative credentials…but he is running on a one issue platform. Huckabee is just too much of a nannystater for me. Ron Paul? I really don’t want to go there. Suffice it to say that I personally disagree with him on the war on terror and several other issues.
While I have tried to be neutral in coverage here, because I am still undecided at this point, I have been leaning towards Fred Thompson. He has solid conservative credentials and a record to show for it. Our friend, and fellow contributor here, Lobo, likes Duncan Hunter. Duncan Hunter has a great conservative record as well, and is definitely right on the issues that are important.
I like Duncan Hunter as well. I’ve continued to lean towards Fred on the electability factor. However, that factor may be fading. In a recent poll of New Hampshire he is really sliding. It’s also a little worrisome that some of his original backers are losing faith. Of course none of that matters. We are throwing out the polls and electability factor in this discussion. There have been plenty of surprises so far and anything can still happen.
The folks at Freerepublic have narrowed their choice down to Fred Thompson and Duncan Hunter. These are the two they think can beat the defeat the liberal abortionists Rudy Giuliani and Hillary Clinton. Some folks there are rooting for a Thompson/Hunter ticket. They have put up a poll if you are interested in participating.
However, the point I’m trying to get at is the unfair treatment by the MSM towards Duncan Hunter. I’ve also been curious as to why so many conservatives are backing a liberal like Rudy Giuliani and questionable characters like Mitt Romney. Why is so little attention being paid towards a solid conservative like Duncan Hunter?
I’m not the only one wondering. Rush Limbaugh had this question brought up while talking to a listener.
CALLER: All right. The question is this. I think the most conservative candidate that we have for president is Duncan Hunter, going through his website, listening to what he’s got on the news, his different interviews and stuff, I mean he definitely meets the conservative agenda head on. And we’re just not hearing a lot from him. And we’re not hearing a lot from him, from you. And I’m wondering, sir, do you have any plans in the near future for interviews with him, for talking to him on the air? I mean, I did hear, you spoke about an e-mail update you got from him the other day, but other than that it looks like the best candidate here is not getting pushed by the strongest conservative people.
RUSH: Well, here’s my answer to your question. I’m asked this a lot and historically I have not gotten involved in primaries, because if I had any of these people, and they have all asked to come on this show, and I respectfully say no, because I’d have to ask them all back. And I really don’t look at this program as a campaign vehicle during primaries. Among other things, I, frankly, Mark, I have the belief that political candidates have a duty to get noticed themselves. It’s an unfair process in terms — Mrs. Clinton. Mrs. Clinton is strictly there because she didn’t divorce her husband. In fact, she’s strictly there because she married him. If her last name weren’t Clinton, she’d be the dean of some all-girls’ school in Albania touring villages at night and doing whatever you do in a village at night, when you run an all-girls’ school. She’s just benefiting from conventional wisdom. In the case of Rudy, the reason Rudy is getting a lot of attention is the northeastern bias in the media. The northeastern bias in the media wants two northeasterners to run.
Even some of our conservative journalist friends who are headquartered and work in the northeast, in New York and Washington, are willing to overlook, in some cases, the lack of genuine conservatism in some candidates because they’re from the northeast. They have a geographical bias because of where they live. People in the northeast think it’s at that it’s the heartbeat and the pulse of the country there, and the rest of the country is flyover country and all of that. So it’s tough to get out of the bottom tier. You need a really humongous debate performance, and you need an early announcement in some cases when you’re going against somebody that’s going to benefit from all the conventional wisdom, the media and others. But I sit and watch until one of them surfaces because that’s what their job is to do, not mine.
Rush brings up a good point. You do have to overcome the unfair treatment of the media, and get yourself noticed. So does this bring us back to the factors of electability and name recognition? Those factors do weigh heavily on many voters. I guess we can’t throw them out, but wouldn’t it be nice if conservatives put more weight on the issues that matter instead of compromising to the MSM’s popularity contests? In the meanwhile, I’ll pray that the more conservative candidates start doing something to get noticed more.
Out of my two favorites, Fred Thompson probably still has the better chance. Hopefully he wakes up from his lackluster campaigning and does a few slams at the next debate. If Hunter has an opportunity handed to him, I hope he goes for it as well. In the meantime, a Thompson/Hunter ticket might not be a bad thing to hope for. Time is ticking, but at this point…anything can still happen.

An Endorsement for Fred Thompson
Statement by Fred Thompson on National Right to Life Endorsement
McLean, VA - Senator Thompson released the following statement today regarding the National Right to Life's endorsement of his candidacy for President:
"I'm deeply appreciative for the past support by the National Right to Life Committee-PAC in my Senate campaigns, and today I am blessed and grateful to have received their endorsement for President of the United States.
"In supporting me, those who have worked tirelessly to defend life are supporting a consistent conservative who has stood with them yesterday, who stands with them today, and will stand with them tomorrow."
Fred Thompson is pro-life. He believes in the sanctity of human life and that every life is worthy of respect. He had a 100% pro-life voting record in the Senate and believes Roe v. Wade was a bad decision that ought to be overturned. He consistently opposed federal funding to promote or pay for abortion and supported the Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act, the Child Custody Protection Act, and President Reagan's Mexico City policy. While Fred Thompson supports adult stem cell research, he opposes embryonic stem cell research. He also opposes human cloning.

Political Pistachio's Views on the Candidates
Red November is more than a blogroll, it is a hope for the future. Every election conservatives get together and decide that the upcoming vote will be a defining decision for our nation. Truly, every election defines this nation, and sends our political environment into a new direction. This is what is so great about freedom. This is why I love my country so much. We have a choice.
Last Sunday night, as I listened to Andrea Shea King on a live stream from WBDO AM 580, in the chat room a discussion about Rudy Giuliani broke out. Many of the commenters determined, as I have, that Giuliani is no more than a Liberal dressed up in an elephant's costume. His policies in New York when he was mayor shadow those programs and actions that Hillary Clinton proclaims she desires to put into place once she gains royal control of our fine nation. In the eyes of those commenters in Andrea Shea King's chat room, aside from his willingness to continue to fight the war on terror, Rudy Giuliani is just as dangerous, and perhaps more dangerous, than Hillary Clinton, should he find his way into the White House.
The discussion is fairly exhaustive. Click on the link to read the whole post.
Good work, Doug!

Thoughts on the First Republican Debate
I got this in the mail this morning.
Yesterday, Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani continued their partisan bickering, this time over things like the constitutionality of the line item veto. While they played politics, Fred Thompson rose above it and took his conservative, small government, tax cutting message straight to the American people.
He talked directly to the American people about keeping more of what they earn. He talked truth about entitlements. He talked about keeping America safe. He made it known that when it comes to our national security, it won’t be his attorneys that Fred Thompson will first sit down with, it will be his generals.
Overall, he showed the courage and honesty to address the nation’s real problems, and the leadership to solve them. Fred Thompson may have been standing between Romney and Rudy, but he stood far above both of them.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Fred was great for his first debate. I think Fred is going to do fabulous. My faith lies in Fred :-)
While Doug at Political Pistachio states:
The hope for a Red November is little more than a year from now, and the first debate to include Fred Thompson aired last night. Granted, I wasn't sure if having Chris Matthews as moderator was a good thing, but MSNBC hosting the debate showed that the Republican Party is not afraid of fielding questions from the Liberal Left. In fact, a number of the Republican Candidates have come on as guests on many of the left leaning news channels. Rarely, however, do you see the Democrats willing to come on shows like Bill O'Reilly's, Sean Hannity's, or Brit Hume's.
Anyhow, watching the debate what I saw was a bunch of politicians acting like politicians. There were a few high spots and low spots, but ultimately, none of the candidates impressed me much.
And Guess what? The Media acted like the Media as well. The questions were often loaded.
But the two big stories are about Romney and Thompson.
According to Rudy Giuliani, Mitt Romney made a big mistake during the debate. Romney stated that he would consult lawyers before taking military action on Iran.
According to Fox News: “I can’t imagine John F. Kennedy during the Cuban Missile Crisis … saying ‘I will check with lawyers,’” Giuliani said at an editorial board meeting with FOX News Channel in Washington, D.C. “It was one of those moments" when the candidate immediately wants to cover his mouth.
And how did Fred Thompson do in his first debate (better late than never, I guess)?
Well, he stood there mostly, and watched the pros go about their business. He watched Rudy and Romney spar back and forth, probably learned a bit from Huckabee's one liners, perhaps picked up a few pointers from Tancredo's strong position on immigration, and marveled at the intelligence that Duncan Hunter exudes. But for the most part, it seemed like Thompson was unprepared, although he did hold his own on substantive exchanges over the economy and foreign policy. Was he as bad on stage as Britney Spears at the MTV Movie Awards? Hardly. Perhaps he just needs a little more practice to keep from dropping that low.
So who won my vote last night?
The independent candidates.
Welcome!
